Worked Examples

Arc: Setup shows mundane life → inciting incident is discovering an ad using their memory → climax is confronting the company → resolution is an ambiguous choice about whether to keep living authentically or profit from it.

Example 2: Short Story, Literary, 3000 words

Premise: Two estranged siblings meet to clear out their late parent's house.

Arc: Setup establishes the tension between them → rising action through objects that trigger old memories/conflicts → climax is a confrontation over one specific item → resolution is a small, earned moment of reconnection (not full reconciliation: that would feel unearned).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• No real resolution: the story just stops instead of resolving the central tension
• Rising action that doesn't actually escalate: obstacles that don't raise the stakes
• POV inconsistency: shifting from first to third person without intention
• Too much setup, not enough story: spending half the word count before the inciting incident
• A resolution that feels unearned: emotional payoff bigger than what the story actually built toward

A short story doesn't need a happy ending, but it does need an ending: the tension you raise has to land somewhere.
